What is a General Investment Account (GIA)?

A General Investment Account (GIA) is a savings account where you hold investments, but unlike an ISA, it isn't tax-free.

Capital at risk. The value of investments can fall as well as rise, and you may get less than the full amount you invest. You may be liable to pay tax on dividends you receive and when you sell your investments.

How does it work?

Invest in a range of funds using our ready made portfolios or choosing your own funds from our comparison tables of over 1,000 funds from 90 providers. Our CushonMe monitoring service will keep a eye on your investments.

How much can I save?

There's no limit to how much you can save into a General Investment Account.

What are the benefits of a General Investment Account?

A General Investment Account is a great way to invest if you’ve already reached your ISA allowance for the year. You can easily access and withdraw your money at any time.

Anything else I need to know?

When you invest in a GIA you may have to pay tax on any income or capital gains you earn from your investments. Alternatively, you can invest up to £20,000 each tax year into an Investment ISA, where your gains are tax-free. If you don’t already have an Investment ISA you might want to consider this before you invest in a GIA.

The value of investments can fall as well as rise, and you may get less than the full amount you invest. You may be liable to pay tax on dividends you receive and when you sell your investments.
